The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has awarded the City of Murcia 26,382 euros aid from the Leader Community Initiatives for the restoration and improvement of the coastal environment of the Segura river channel areas and sports in this town.
The Director General of Irrigation and Rural Development, Julio Bernal, emphasized that the goal of this project is to "contribute to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the town and provide a tourist attraction to raise the number of visitors."
In this regard, he added that "the promotion of tourism in rural areas is a key issue for development."
The aid has been earmarked for the installation of drinking fountains and building barbecues, tables and benches, as well as pruning of existing trees, reforestation of areas with new poplar, cleaning areas and Sunset up new drip irrigation systems.
Project funding comes from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), which contributes 75 percent of the amount.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment and the Community co-finance the remaining 25 percent.
The responsible regional stressed the importance of community financing initiatives such as the Leader approach "to realize projects that diversify the rural economy, create jobs and encourage citizen participation."
The project, part of the Rural Development Programme for the Region of Murcia 2007-2013, has been run by the Local Action Group Association for Integrated Rural Development of the Municipalities of the Vega del Segura, encompassing a total of ten municipalities of this region.
