The use of hydrogen cyanamide is prohibited on agriculture at the harmful effects posed to applicators
Alcohol intake within two days before and after contact with hydrogen cyanamide increases symptoms
Agents Service Nature Protection (SEPRONA) Civil Guard of Murcia, in the operation called "lethargy", have proceeded to the arrest, in the town of Murcia, two people on suspicion of a crime against natural resources and the environment and the other against the public health, marketing and use of illegal plant substance called hydrogen cyanamide.
In addition, as part of the proceedings, have been seized and brought to justice, a total of 60 liters of the active substance concerned, most of which were found on the premises of a commercial establishment selling this product the town of Archena.
Withdrawal by its harmful effects
Cyanamide was excluded from the list of active substances in plant protection products which are authorized (Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC) by Decision 745/2008 of the Commission on September 18, 2008, in which states that "there are clear signs which suggest that it has harmful effects on human health and, in particular, for the operators."
First news about their use
The operation conducted by the SEPRONA started last year 2012, when the agents had news of the possible misuse of this chemical plant on agriculture.
Put in place the appropriate devices for locating distributors and applicators of this substance at the end of 2012 were detected 60 liters of hydrogen cyanamide supposed, hidden and identified as mulch, held by a retail product plant in the town of Murcia, so we proceeded to the taking of samples for analysis.
Days later, the Meritorious obtained evidence on the application of the substance on two farms in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, proceeding likewise to sampling localized products.
Results of analysis
After analyzing the substance by the Criminal Investigation Service of the Civil Guard, concluded that samples collected at the point of sale of pesticides and those found in possession of one of the farmers were consistent with hydrogen cyanamide , circumstances that led to the arrest of the head of both commercial establishment whose facilities containers had been found, as the farmer who allegedly proceeded to its agricultural application.
Threat to humans and the environment
Reportedly obtained by SEPRONA, hydrogen cyanamide has adverse effects for humans, which, moreover, would be enhanced by ingesting the alcohol within two days before and after exposure to the substance.
Likewise, the substance is toxic to aquatic organisms and should be avoided effectively incorporating the environment.
Detained
As part of the investigation, and suspicion of a crime against the natural resources and the environment and to public health another, have been arrested persons identified as:
- Spanish, 43 years old and lives in Archena.
- Spanish, 39 years old and lives in Archena.
The actions taken have been brought to justice, realizing all this, moreover, to the Office of Environment and Urbanism of the High Court of Justice of Murcia.
