Archena has become part and township of the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate, says report
(The 3rd) Local Policy to Combat Climate Change of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, dated 2011.
It is a covenant of Mayors promoted by the European Commission of Cities for Climate.
The signatories assumed the commitment to improving energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources in their territories with the goal of reducing by 20 percent their emissions of CO2.
During the celebration of World Environment Day was presented this Third Report of Local Policies to Combat Climate Change.
This report gives an overview of the strategies and commitments on climate change existing global, European, national and local levels.
The municipalities that participated, among which is Archena have taken action on energy saving and efficiency, implementing renewable energy in municipal facilities.
More than half of the municipalities received has a Sustainable Mobility Plan, such as the construction of bike lanes, pedestrianization of streets, restriction to private traffic in certain areas, parking restrictions and speed limits.
Overall, according to the report cited, emissions from these sectors fell by 3.58 percent, from 2005 to 2010, demonstrating progress in local policies to combat climate change undertaken by the Spanish municipalities.
There are many objectives of the report of the Federation of Municipalities, but among the highlights, are actions to reduce climate change impacts at the local level, and to encourage citizens in the fight against climate change.
Other data provided by this report are that Spain is the second most Mayors signatories after Italy and in the Region of Murcia are 10 municipalities adhering to the plan, including Murcia, which already has more than 19,000 inhabitants.
