The Mayor-Pedánea of ??La Algaida, María José Guillén, and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Pedro José Ríos, are carrying out a pilot project to end the annoying thickets and stubble from the lots in La Algaida.
To do this, an 'army' of more than two hundred goats clean the lots adjacent to the urbanizations of this district.
This is a pioneering ecological initiative in Archena.
In these times of crisis Consuelo Alcolea, owner of the Ganadería Los Grandes, has been forced to reinvent itself by having to reduce the milk production of its goat farming.
Since goats should eat more grass and less feed, considering that a goat can eat 2.5 to 3 kilos of forage a day,the Town Planning Councilor has proposed to the rancher that his goats help in the task that the Consistory has to clean the lots of the urbanizations. This goat livestock is of indigenous breed and the only one registered in the municipality of Archena, has a designation of origin and a certificate of quality in the products, which they supply to the Villa Vieja Cheese Factory with a factory in Calasparra.
This company has recognized international prestige.
With the products of these goats, the cheeses with the designation of origin "Queso de Murcia" and "Queso de Murcia al Vino" are made.
Until today, more than a dozen owners of private plots have offered their urban spaces to be cleaned by the goats of Consuelo Alcolea.
