An exhibition at the Museum of Archena commemorates the centenary of the death of Inocencio Medina Vera (12/03/2019)

The regional government, through the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and the City of Archena commemorate the centenary of the death of the painter Inocencio Medina Vera with an exhibition that will open its doors on 20 March at the Museum of Archena.

The exhibition, which can be visited until the end of May, brings together a total of 23 paintings by the archenero creator and was presented by the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, together with the mayor, Patricia Fernández.

The counselor said that the show "recovers an essential painter in the history of our region and maximum representative of Murcian and Spanish costumbrismo, an artist who rivaled in his time with Sorolla, precursors of the luminism in Spain."

The head of Culture recalled that "we are talking about a creator whose works are part of collections as important as the Museo del Prado or the Thyssen Foundation, among many others, an artist who died young, at age 42, but whose work was numerous critics that extolled the elegance, composition, light and color of his works and that left us authentic unique gems that we can enjoy in many museums and spaces. "

More than a score of them, he added, "will arrive at the Museum of Archena within this commemorative project that aims to remember, especially the youngest, the greatness of this great artist."

The exhibited works belong, almost in their entirety, to private collections of the Region of Murcia, "so they are pieces that can rarely be seen and, in fact, some of them are unpublished for the public," he said. Guardiola

Also, four works that belong to the collection of the Community will be part of the exhibition: 'Picnic Snack' and 'Naked Child', which are usually exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia;

'Bailarinas', which has recently been restored in the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia and 'La Campesina'.

Among the paintings of private collections also highlight 'Baptism in the garden', with which he achieved the second medal of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1906, 'The rooster in the square', 'The Rosal', 'Landscape huertano' or 'Huertano con perro', among others.

Some works made by Medina Vera with diverse techniques, from oil on canvas and on board to gouache and watercolors.

Inocencio Medina Vera 'will open on March 20 and will remain open until May 24 at the Archena Museum, open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Sundays) in the afternoon, closed).

The Minister stressed that this exhibition "can be seen in the author's hometown, in Archena, whose museum is part of the Regional Museum System, a sample of the richness and variety of cultural activities of quality that we can enjoy in different municipalities of the Region and that become a claim also tourist for those who come from outside ".

Trajectory

Innocent Medina Vera (1876-1918) was born in Archena.

Son of teachers, his career went from a very young to the world of art and painting.

After studying drawing and painting in Murcia, in 1893 he traveled to Madrid with a grant from the Provincial Council to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

At the beginning of the 20th century he collaborated with the painter Antonio de la Torre in the decoration of the Romea Theater, recovered after a fire.

With the help of Torcuato Luca de Tena, he collaborated with the Spanish press making illustrations for 'ABC' and 'Blanco y Negro';

some covers that earned him prestige and fame.

He also collaborated later on other magazines such as 'La esfera', 'Madrid Cómico', 'Mundo Gráfico' or '¡Alegría!', As well as illustrating short novels from the literary collections 'El Cuento Semanal' and 'Los Contemporáneos'.

He lived in Argentina, where he achieved fame as a portraitist among high society, and there he created the illustrated magazine 'La Semana Universal', as well as founding an arts and antiques room.
