Ramon y Cajal street reopened to traffic (07/08/2008)

The emblematic Calle Ramón y Cajal, and commercial hub of historic Archena, this morning is reopened to vehicular traffic, after it has undergone major refurbishment.

This road runs around 1,500 vehicles daily on average, in addition to significant foot traffic.

Maximum Councillors Gomariz, head of Public Works, Joaquín López, Councillor for Environment and Services, and Rosario Navarro, Culture and Tourism, together with the local police chief, Emilio Argüeso, today attended the opening.

The improvements consisted primarily in the redevelopment of urban areas in that street and has hit 35 homes and a length of 300 meters.

To carry out the project has paved the driveway and sidewalks, adapting to the new standards of accessibility in the region, being the total paved surface of 1,237 square meters.

The sidewalks, which once measured 60 cm have been constructed to a length of 1.50 meters wide, and at crosswalks ramps have been enabled to fulfill the Act's accessibility, ie people with reduced mobility (PRM) which at the same time facilitate the passage of the baby strollers and shopping carts.

Have also been installed at these intersections 5 traffic lights to regulate the passage of vehicles, as the street remains two-way.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the City of Archena and the concessionaire Municipal Water Service, has undertaken a significant improvement in overall network of water and rush home, which consisted in changing ductile iron pipes 100 mm in diameter and a rush of polyethylene 32 mm in diameter.

The work, sponsored by the Commonwealth Consortium Ricote Valley, have cost about 60,000 euros.
