The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), an agency under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, has begun to build the last of the eight scales of the Life + Segura Riverlink project.

It is an infrastructure that will allow the free migration of the fish in the river Segura as it passes through the municipality of Archena, as it will save a waterfall of three meters high that was impassable for animals.

The scale, 60 meters long, is a naturalized river and has a width of 3.5 meters.

The president of the CHS, Miguel Angel Ródenas, visited this morning the works with the mayor of Archena, Patricia Fernandez.

The Life + Segura Riverlink project promoted by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) began in 2013 and its main objective is to make it easier for aquatic species to overcome jumps, springs and other water levels in a 54 km section of the Segura river, without Eliminate flood defense infrastructures.

This project is also especially focused on helping the recovery of native species of the river Segura as the Gypsy Beard (Luciobarbus Sclateri).

This is the first project of the Life + Program that led a hydrographic confederation in Spain and has a budget of 3.4 million euros, of which the CHS contributes half, co-financed by the EU, and the rest is paid by the partners. Project: Government of the Region of Murcia, University of Murcia, University of Valladolid and the environmental association ANSE.

The work being carried out within the project entails an environmental restoration of the banks, as well as the creation of a network of custody of the territory in the zones contiguas to the river, in about 500 meters upstream and downstream of the places where Are the scales.

In addition, a diffusion and awareness campaign is being carried out to raise awareness of the problems associated with the conservation and restoration of the river.

Environmental improvement

The Life + Segura Riverlink project, along with the Life + Ripisilvanatura project, has been an accolade to the work of the CHS to improve the environmental conditions of the river Segura in a very anthropized environment, such as the middle and low vegas.

The joint action in these areas of the basin organization and the Government of the Region of Murcia, which in the late 1990s and early in the century led to a general plan for the purification and reuse of wastewater, has made it possible for one of the most polluted rivers Of Europe to have imperceptible pollution levels in all its sections.

This beneficial transformation has earned him awards and recognition and has attracted the interest of international experts and publications such as the prestigious European Riverprize in 2016.
